ABOUT Kate
A past firmly grounded in science
Kate double-majored in chemistry and physics at Smith College, then went on to get a masters in metabolic engineering at Tufts University. She is a classic nerd, loving the puzzle of a natural mystery and delighting in sharing the knowledge she gains. She has worked both as a classroom teacher, to convey the science, and as a lab scientist and engineering student, to discover more.
Loss derailed her plan.
Kate is a PhD dropout — this means she took all the PhD classes and graduated with a rather robust consolation-masters after four years of postgraduate research, but will never be called “Doctor.”
Just days after graduation, 35 weeks pregnant, Kate went in for an ultrasound where they found terrible problems with her baby, Laurel’s brain. Laurel was given a devastating prognosis for a brief, excruciatingly painful life.
At the time, Massachusetts laws and hospital policy limited options for a devastating but “viable” condition like Laurel’s, leaving only intensive, painful interventions on offer. There was no path for compassionate induction, palliative care, or abortion. It is terrible to have to choose between certain peace or a chance at life. But Kate and her husband felt clear in their choice. They were forced to travel 2000 miles to access the abortion that they needed.
Stepping into support work:
Grief is Kate’s first somatic teacher. And sometimes, it seems like the most important one. Grief gives no diploma, no certificate, and no credentials, but grief is an initiation all its own.
As part of her grief, Kate turned towards the online TFMR support group, Ending a Wanted Pregnancy. She joined to receive support, but stayed to give support. There is a healing path of kindness by proxy, where one learns to love herself by loving others first. This was the work at EWP. Kate has been in a leadership role in that space since 2012, spending the first decade of that volunterring seeing new members through the door and responding to every single story — thousands and thousands of stories. Until not just her own grief, but the grief of the entire community became her teacher.
Changing Focus
In 2020, when Covid-19 hit the United States, Kate was back in the classroom teaching middle school math and science. She saw it to the end of that first crazy year, and left her position to home-school her children through the worst of it. It was in the space that Covid opened up that she invested two more intensive years into education, this time, as a somatic coach. She has been coaching ever since 2021, and has since completed the following programs

Home Life
Outside of all this, Kate is mom to two living daughters (currently teenagers), born two years before and two years after Laurel.
She lives with her daughters and her husband in Massachusetts, and has been advocating for abortion rights, locally and nationally as a story-teller-activist.
Kate continues to volunteer as space-holder (and org VP) at Ending a Wanted Pregnancy
Her life is good. Grief can be brutal, but it also opens up so, so much, and Kate works to help others find the spaciousness and peace that lives right at the center of grief.
I deeply believe we are already whole and ok, no matter how fragmented we feel. The work is finding all the parts of ourselves we’ve lost and rejected along the way, calling them home to one integrated self. It is a deep honor to hold you on your journey.
If you’d like to find your own space of strength, peace, and love on your own journey, I’m here to hold you through the process and offer tools along the way.
